Deadline for renewing your 2008 membership is January 31st.
Availability
All plots were assigned in 2007, so there are no empty plots.
As of January 25th, many returning members have paid for their plots. The January 31st deadline for payment is approaching fast! Please consider paying ahead of the deadline.
Also, if you are unsure of whether you would still like to garden this year, give the waiting applicants a chance.
Becoming a Member
- First, you may want to have an idea of the layout of the garden. This layout is an approximation of the relative locations of the various plots and resources such as water, mulch, parking areas and other amenities.
- Next, you may want to review the rules and regulations that every member must adhere to.
- We depend on volunteers to keep the garden in good condition. Please see later to find out how you may be able to help in this area.
- The yearly fee is set at $30 and is is due at the beginning of the year for existing members (this year it is Jan 31st). New members may join anytime after that - sooner the better, you do not want to lose out on the growing season. Of course, the availability of plots depends on many factors. Please use the feedback form to find out. If there is enough interest in this website we will try to make an effort to update availability information on this site on a regular basis.
- The garden opens in April and closes in October. The exact date is determined by the administration of the Homewood Cemetary. Remember that the land belongs to them and we are just gardening there together for fun.
- And finally, apply for a plot using the feedback form.
Volunteer Work
The garden is run completely by volunteers. You may contribute by:- Sign up to help with administration of the gardens
- Mow the pathways*
- Trim the pathways*
- Help maintain equipment
- Maintain the compose bins.
- Maintain the front flower beds
- Organize a community activity
* Mower and weed-wacker are located under a tarp near the tool bins. Please take care to lock them up when finished – we’ve already had one mower and a rototiller stolen.
Rules and Regulations
- Payment is due by the posted deadline, no exceptions. This year it is Jan 31st.
- No trees or illegal substances may be grown in any garden.
- Maintain your garden. Keep weeds to a minimum so that they don’t seed other plots and harbor pests. Owners of plots that are habitually untended will be notified, and plots may be reassigned if this is a constant problem.
- Keep the garden paths free of objects, so they are easy to mow and don’t present a danger to people walking thru the gardens.
- Keep your garden neat. Do not store non-gardening items in your plot.
- The gardens are non-transferable. If you sign for the plot you are responsible for it regardless of who does the actual gardening.
- Place only biodegradable materials in the compost & surrounding woods. Place only non-biodegradable materials in the garbage can near the parking lot.
- NO HOSES are permitted.
- No dogs are allowed in Homewood Cemetery. Unfortunately, this includes the garden. Please leave your dogs at home.
- Parking is permitted only in the parking lot that is accessible from Forbes Ave. Homewood Cemetery has repeatedly requested that the maintenance-building road only be used by gardeners to DROP OFF or PICK UP heavy items. If you use this road, please do not park your vehicle on the grass while you load/unload.
- Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in Homewood Cemetery and therefore the garden area.
- If you are the last to leave the garden, please make sure you lock the tool bins & wheelbarrow.
- At the end of the season, please clean up your garden by removing unsightly materials & collapsible structures.
- Please do not pick any flowers, fruits or vegetables from anyone’s plot but your own. Also, please do not dig up any “starters” from anyone’s plots without the owner’s prior permission.
And lastly,
Have a
Wonderful gardening season!
*These rules are not meant to harass or penalize anyone, but are construed in fairness so that we can continue to use the Homewood property and to have an enjoyable place to grow our food.
